Thousands without power as severe weather impacts Cape Fear area

CAPE FEAR AREA, NC (WWAY) — Strong weather battered the Cape Fear region throughout Saturday evening and into Sunday afternoon.

According to Duke Energy, about 4,000 people are without power, with over 1,000 outages located in both Leland and Wilmington.

Nearly 300 outages have been reported in Sea Breeze, 80 in Carolina Beach, and more than 30 in Kure Beach.

Several areas saw strong wind gusts as high as 60 miles per hour.

In Wilmington, more than 2.5 inches of rain fell, while some places saw more than 3 inches in less than 24 hours.

Canal Drive in Carolina Beach was closed due to flooding while the Cape Fear River overflowed the parking lot of the Battleship North Carolina.

However, despite the severe weather, no flights into or out of Wilmington International Airport had been delayed or canceled as of Sunday evening.
